Gutter clearing
Clearing removes leaves, moss, silt and loose debris from inside accessible guttering so rainwater can get to the down-pipe instead of over the front edge. It is a functional job: the point is that the system works, not that it looks better from the pavement. Down-pipe tops are cleared where they can be reached safely, and the debris is bagged, with disposal confirmed on your quotation.
Gutter, fascia and soffit cleaning
This is about appearance. The visible exterior faces of the guttering, the fascia boards along the roof edge and the soffits underneath collect traffic film, algae and general weathering. Cleaning them from a safe working position, with a method suited to the material and its condition, tidies up the whole roofline of the house.
How to tell which one you need
- Water spilling over in rain, or staining down the wall below a joint: clearing.
- Plants growing above the gutter line: clearing.
- Grubby, streaked or green plastic when you look up from the garden: exterior cleaning.
- Both problems at once: both jobs, usually on the same visit.
Neither one is a repair
This is worth being blunt about. A leaking joint will still leak once the gutter is clear. A run that has dropped will still hold water once the front of it has been cleaned. Loose brackets need refixing by someone who does that work. Cleaning and clearing do not fix any of it, and nobody should suggest otherwise.
Realistic results on the exterior surfaces
General dirt and green build-up usually come off well. Oxidised or chalky plastic, failing paint, permanent staining and existing damage will still show afterwards. If a result is likely to be limited, you will hear it before the work is booked.
What the quotation confirms
Whichever you go for, the written quotation sets out the service, the elevations and the surfaces included, along with the total price. If you want clearing and exterior cleaning together, both are listed so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
