Why sandstone is treated differently
Sandstone is a natural stone, so colour, hardness and surface texture vary from slab to slab and batch to batch. A method that suits a hard concrete slab can mark sandstone. The condition matters too — an older patio that has weathered or been cleaned badly before needs more care than a recently laid one.
What cleaning usually removes
General dirt, surface grime, algae, moss and organic build-up in the joints and across the face of the stone usually respond well. Most patios come back to a much more even colour once the green growth and dirt have gone.
What is assessed first
Before a price is confirmed, the type and condition of the stone, the state of the pointing, drainage and nearby planting are all looked at. Clear photographs in daylight, including a close-up, make that assessment far more accurate.

Common questions
Can you remove black spot from sandstone?
Not reliably, and nobody honest will promise it from a photograph. Black spot sits within the stone rather than on top of it. General dirt, algae and organic growth usually clean off well; deeper marks may stay.
Will cleaning damage the stone?
Sandstone can be marked by an unsuitable method, which is why the stone and its condition are assessed first and the approach adjusted rather than blasted at full pressure.
What about loose pointing between the slabs?
Pointing that is already loose or failing may come away during cleaning. If it looks fragile you will be told before the work starts, and repointing is not part of the service.
