Exterior Cleaning Advice

Can driveway stains be removed?

Some can, some fade and some stay. General cleaning removes surface build-up very effectively, but oil, rust, paint and tyre marks sit differently in the surface and complete removal cannot honestly be guaranteed.

Why stains behave differently to dirt

Everyday grime, algae and moss sit on top of the paving, which is why a proper clean makes such a visible difference. A stain is different: the substance has gone into a porous surface. Cleaning the top of the paving does not necessarily reach it.

The usual suspects

  • Oil and engine fluids. Fresh spills often respond well. Older patches that have soaked in usually lighten rather than disappear, leaving a shadow.
  • Rust. Marks from planters, garden furniture or metal fixings vary enormously. Some lift, some are effectively permanent.
  • Paint. Once it has cured into the surface it is bonded there. Cleaning rarely removes it fully, and aggressive attempts risk damaging the paving.
  • Tyre marks. Rubber transfer often improves noticeably but can leave faint darker areas where a car turns on the same spot.
  • Leaf, berry and organic staining. These are usually the most co-operative and often clear well.

What makes a difference to the outcome

How long the mark has been there, how porous the surface is, what the substance was, and whether anything has already been tried on it. Household products and shop-bought treatments can set a stain or bleach the surrounding area, which makes the situation harder to improve rather than easier.

Cleaning versus specialist stain treatment

A standard driveway clean is about the whole area: build-up removed, an even finish, and on block paving the joints re-sanded as part of the job. Targeting one stubborn mark is a separate piece of work with a genuinely uncertain result, and it should be discussed and priced separately rather than quietly assumed.

What you will be told

If a mark is unlikely to shift, you will hear that before the work is booked rather than afterwards. It is better to expect a big improvement across the driveway and a faint remaining patch than to be promised perfection and be disappointed.

Getting a realistic answer

Send close-up daylight photographs of the marks along with a wider shot of the area. Read more on the driveway cleaning page and the concrete driveway and slab cleaning page, or request a written quote.

Common questions

Will an old oil patch come out completely?

Usually not. Oil soaks into porous paving, so cleaning often lifts a good deal of it but leaves a shadow behind. Fresh spills stand a much better chance than something that has been there for years.

Why will you not guarantee stain removal from my photograph?

A photograph shows the mark but not what caused it, how long it has been there or how deep it has gone. Anyone promising complete removal from a picture is guessing.

Is there a difference between cleaning and stain treatment?

Yes. General cleaning removes surface build-up across the whole area. Specialist stain treatment targets one specific mark and is a separate piece of work with its own uncertainty.
